OUR TEACHERS

To impart these life lessons, she responded to the call to be a Pilates Teacher. After 8 years of teaching Pilates, she co-founded Altum Physio Pilates with Jaden Lim and CP Tham to bring Pilates deeper into the medical realm. This way, everyone can go deep into the Work of Joseph Pilates, through the application of sound research, experience and execution.
At Altum, the original work and intent of Pilates are valued. Joanne always refer clients back to what Joseph Pilates wanted for each execution of every exercise or apparatus. “In this day and age, it’s tempting to follow a fashion of fancy moves and the industry uses the term “Pilates” loosely. Popularity is gained through fancy moves, LED lightings in the studio and loud music. These don’t do justice to the original work and intent of Pilates. “We should always strive to bring back the original essence of the Work and be authentic.”
After all, Joseph Pilates created Pilates to rehabilitate wounded soldiers and injured dancers – therefore, it is good for everyone today.
Flora began to find Pilates very interesting and challenging as there were many modifications and possibilities available for different clientele. There was also more to Pilates than just mat exercises – she realised that the principles of Pilates were also applicable to help her choir students sing better.
Eventually, Flora decided to take up an instructor course to deepen her own knowledge of the subject. With the Pilates certification, opportunities to teach and cover Pilates classes became aplenty. Such opportunities exposed her to different types of clients and their needs, helping to better her knowledge of Pilates and, at the same time, increasing her desire to learn more.
Areas of expertise:
✅Pilates for special populations (injuries, pain, and recovery)
✅Matwork
✅Pilates for mobility and flexibility
✅Working with singers, teenage choristers,
and musicians (core control, posture, alignment and joint mobility)

Her weekly Pilates practice, sometimes as early as 7 am, led her to a journey of self-discovery. She pursued her education with SMART Movement’s Teacher Training course led by Master Trainer Ole Eugenio and attained her teaching licence in 2020.
Today, she still enjoys her fitness regime including HIIT workouts and strength training, and regularly practises Pilates. Pilates has gifted her awareness in proper alignment and engagement of the right muscles to build strength, mobility and control in her body.
Zhi Ling wants to convey to everyone whom she teaches – “You don’t need to give up what you love but use Pilates to create balance and give you the booster to further your athleticism. Joseph Pilates was a circus performer and his family owned a boxing gym. Our bodies are miraculously made to do more than we think we can.”
Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness – Joseph Pilates
She was patient in guiding her as a beginner and she felt accepted by her. That session was revealing as she felt parts of her body come alive.
As a young adult who just returned to Singapore from university, she dived into building up a corporate career and didn’t continue with her practice. The posture in a corporate setting led to more aches and pains in my neck, shoulders and back. She managed it with painkillers but the voice of Pilates kept calling her back. With a “enough is enough” mental frustration, she returned to Pilates and after 2 years of consistent discipline, she began her education with master trainer Kevin Bowen of Core Dynamics Pilates and was licensed to teach in December 2020.
Cheryl continued her education with Ole Eugenio of Smart Movement Asia where she learnt the origins of the Pilates system and the essence of each exercise. The revelation of the “powerhouse” and “lift” helped her appreciate the principles of Pilates when executing each move.
“In today’s day and age where technology and social media have become ubiquitous in the lives of children, it is inevitable that the physical and mental wellbeing of the children are affected. Therefore, Cheryl has special interest in educating the younger generation on the importance of good posture through a series of Pilates exercises.”
“Change happens through movement and movement heals.” – Joseph Pilates

Her Pilates journey and education revealed more than just getting down to a workout and exercises. Eileen learned the intricacy of Joseph Pilates’ apparatuses – how his systems were elegantly built to support movements and postures. “I’ve gained better body movement awareness and this really helped me grow in my practice as a Pilates teacher. For example, I couldn’t do the Roll Up properly due to my tight back and flatback posture. Now I’m able to
articulate my spine and execute the movement with control. There is so much more to Pilates and I hope to be able to share my passion and knowledge as a Pilates teacher.”
A message for anyone who wants to try Pilates?
Eileen advised, “Pilates can be tailored to anyone and it is really a whole body commitment. We don’t just isolate a group of muscles to execute a movement; we look at your posture and body alignment as you practice on the system. Be patient and your body will adjust and align as you practice overtime.”
Eileen advocates Pilates for everyone and encourages clients to be patient as time will reveal the uniqueness of each body. No one session of Pilates will feel the same and she hopes for her clients to feel more empowered and lifted after every session.
